Online MEWP course – personnel lifts 3A and 3B Estimated duration: 1–2 hours · online theory module · vertical/scissor lifts and boom lifts · start immediately · course certificate after passing

This MEWP course provides thorough theoretical training in the safe use of personnel lifts. The course is suitable for anyone who will use, order, supervise or assist with MEWP work in construction, industry, warehousing, operations, maintenance, cleaning, events and other sectors.

Start the theory module after ordering. Practical and equipment-specific training must be completed at the workplace before independent use.

What you will learn in the MEWP course

  • The difference between vertical/scissor lifts (3A) and boom lifts (3B)
  • How to select a lift based on the task, height, outreach, load and work area
  • Daily checks, operating instructions, inspection status and stopping work when faults occur
  • Ground conditions, outriggers, point loads, trench edges, load-bearing surfaces and tip-over risk
  • Wind, traffic, live electrical installations, crushing hazards and falling objects
  • Safe driving, positioning, work from the platform and securing the work area
  • Emergency stop, emergency lowering, communication, ground personnel and rescue planning
  • Fall protection, anchorage and how the manufacturer’s instructions affect the choice

Who needs MEWP training?

The employer must provide the necessary training when employees use work equipment that requires particular caution. For personnel lifts, this normally means theory, practical training for the relevant group or type, and an equipment-specific review of the lift that will actually be used.

Theory first – practical training on the correct lift

The online course covers the theory module and ends with a knowledge test. Before independent use, the employer must also provide practical and equipment-specific training, conduct a local risk assessment and assess actual competence. This allows the training to be adapted to the lift, workplace and task the participant will encounter in practice.

Course certificate

After completing the theory course and passing the knowledge test, the participant receives a digital course certificate for the theory module. The employer documents the practical and equipment-specific training separately.

Working at height and fall protection

MEWP work is work at height. The need for personal fall protection equipment must be determined from the lift’s operating instructions, the work method and the risk assessment. When the work involves a fall risk or the use of personal fall protection equipment, we also recommend our course on working at height and fall protection.

Frequently asked questions

Does the course cover MEWP Groups 3A and 3B?

The course covers theory for common vertical/scissor lifts in Group 3A and boom lifts in Group 3B. Practical training must be adapted to the relevant group and lift.

Can I use a lift after only taking the online course?

The online course covers the theory module. Before independent use, the employer must also document the necessary practical and equipment-specific training and assess competence.

Must I use fall protection in a lift?

This is determined by the lift’s operating instructions, the work method and the risk assessment. In a boom lift, a short lanyard and suitable anchorage are often relevant to reduce ejection risk.

How long is the course certificate valid?

There is no general fixed expiry date. New or updated training may be required when equipment is replaced, tasks change, practical experience is insufficient or other conditions affect competence.

Simple practical training at your own workplace

After the theory module, practical training is completed on the relevant lift with a competent person who provides guidance and confirms completion. The participant practises daily checks, safe driving, emergency functions and positioning. A form for practical and equipment-specific confirmation is included with the certificate and course documentation and is signed after the practical training has been completed.
