The Norwegian Labor Inspection Authority describes common products, routes of exposure, and preventive measures on its page about isocyanates.

What are the training requirements?

Effective August 24, 2023, documented training is required prior to the professional and industrial use of diisocyanates or mixtures with a total concentration of at least 0.1 percent by weight. The training must be appropriate for the intended use and must be renewed at least every five years.

How the company reduces risk

  1. Find all relevant products.
  2. Read the safety data sheet and the label.
  3. Consider whether the product can be replaced.
  4. Choose a closed method and ensure good ventilation whenever possible.
  5. Determine the appropriate protective equipment.
  6. Provide training that is appropriate for the job.
  7. Document procedures and follow through in practice.

Symptoms must be taken seriously

Diisocyanates can cause irritation and allergic sensitization of the skin and respiratory tract. Coughing, labored breathing, chest tightness, or skin reactions after work should be taken seriously and addressed in accordance with the company’s procedures.
