Who needs FSE training?
FSE training is relevant for individuals who work in, participate in the operation of, or come into close contact with electrical installations as part of their specific job duties. This may include qualified personnel, apprentices, trained individuals, contract workers, and certain other professional groups when the company’s risk assessment indicates that FSE is relevant.
The routine use of electrical equipment such as a computer, vacuum cleaner, or coffee maker does not in itself require an FSE course. It is the nature of the work, the electrical system, and the actual electrical risk that determine this.
What should the annual review include?
- the organization's structure, roles, procedures, and responsibilities
- risk assessment, planning, and selection of work methods
- Work on de-energized systems, work near live electrical systems, and AUS
- Disconnection, protection against accidental energization, and voltage check
- arc flash hazard, protective equipment, barriers, and safe distance
- stop criteria, deviations, events, and medical follow-up
- First Aid and Rescue in Accidents Caused by Electric Current
How often must the FSE training be taken?
Training, drills, and instruction must be repeated at least once a year, with no more than 12 months between sessions. The annual update should not be an identical replay every year; it should be based on the organization’s current work tasks, nonconformities, changes to the facility, and lessons learned from the past year.
Is an online course from another institution enough on its own?
DSB describes external courses as a supplement to the company’s own FSE training. The online course provides a documented theoretical component, but the person responsible for training and the employer must also ensure that local and site-specific instruction, relevant practical exercises, any additional AUS training, and an assessment of actual competence are provided.
What about the first-aid course?
Those who complete the FSE course must also complete a first aid course. The training must include first aid for electrical accidents and relevant practical exercises. The online course covers the theory of safe extrication, emergency notification, CPR, and follow-up, while the employer must provide the practical training.
What does the course certificate attest to?
The course certificate verifies completion of the theoretical portion and passing of the knowledge test. It must be included with the company’s documentation of on-site training, first aid training, drills, and other necessary competencies.
