M1–M6 Machine Operator Courses: Requirements and Course Structure

The machine operator course covers training in the use of earth-moving equipment such as excavators, wheel loaders, dump trucks, and bulldozers.

Important: Komplett HMS does not currently offer a complete, certified machine operator course in its online store. This page is a simple guide to the requirements.

When is certified training required?

Earth-moving machines with a power rating exceeding 15 kW require safety training from a certified training provider. Smaller machines may still require documented training depending on the risk involved. The operator also needs training on the specific machine and any additional equipment.

See the Norwegian Labor Inspection Authority’s updated guidance on documented and certified safety training.

Common machine classes

  • M1: dump truck
  • M2: excavator
  • M3: road grader
  • M4: wheel loader
  • M5: Gravel Loader
  • M6: bulldozer

The certificate of competency must cover the engine class to be used.

What does a complete course consist of?

  1. Basic Theory of the Work Environment and Responsibility.
  2. Theory for the relevant machine class.
  3. Practical Basic Training.
  4. Volume training in accordance with the current training plan.
  5. Practical exam and certificate of proficiency.
  6. Training on the specific machine and equipment.

Can a machine operator course be taken entirely online?

No. A complete, certified course must include practical training and an exam. A standalone online course or diploma cannot, on its own, be marketed as a complete machine operator’s certificate.

Checklist Before You Order

  • Is the supplier certified for the correct machine class?
  • Is the entire course included?
  • Have the practical exercises, volume training, and tests been clearly agreed upon?
  • Will you receive a certificate of competence that is valid in Norway?
  • Is training on that specific machine included or planned?

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the 15 kW limit apply to all machines?

This applies to the requirement for certified safety training for earth-moving machinery. Smaller machines may also require documented training when the risk warrants it.

Can the internship be completed at the company?

This may be possible under the current training plan and agreement with a certified training provider. Please clarify this in writing before the course begins.
